The Westgate School

Exploring Coastal Defences and Urban Development

This term, 93 GCSE Yr11 students from Westgate participated in two exciting field trips: one to Hengistbury Head in Bournemouth and the other to Bristol. Both trips offered hands-on experiences that enriched the students' understanding of geographical concepts and real-world applications.

At Hengistbury Head, students investigated the effectiveness of coastal defences. Despite unpredictable weather, they showed excellent behaviour and enthusiasm, gathering data that confirmed the defences are effective in preventing erosion. The trip concluded with a well-deserved ice cream treat, marking the success of their coastal study.

In Bristol, the students explored urban areas, including Stokes Croft, Cabot Circus, Broadmead, Queen Square, and Bristol Harbourside, to evaluate the impact of investment. Through surveys and observations, they confirmed that investment had brought significant benefits to these areas, such as economic growth and enhanced public spaces.

Both field trips were highly successful, offering students valuable insights into coastal and urban geography while strengthening their teamwork and analytical skills. These experiences brought their classroom studies to life, leaving them with a deeper understanding of how geographical processes and investment can transform communities.
