The Westgate School

16-19 Study Programme

All students funded through the Department for Education’s 16-19 funding methodology must be enrolled on a study programme which typically combines qualifications and other activities. The Westgate School 16-19 study offer is designed to provide students with a personalised, structured and challenging learning programme that supports their development and progression in line with their career plans. Study programmes are individually tailored but will typically combine the elements below:

  • A core aim: to achieve 3 A Levels, 3 Applied Level 3 qualifications, or a combination of both which stretch the students and prepare them for education at the next level or for employment.
  • Where students have not yet achieved a Grade 4 in GCSE English and/or Maths: the timetabled study of GCSE English and Maths in order to achieve a Grade 4 in these subjects by the end of their Sixth Form study programme.
  • Work Experience in the Spring Term to give students the opportunity to develop their career choices and to apply their skills in real working conditions.

  • Non-qualification activities: these are provided to complement the other elements of the programme, which support the students’ character, attitudes, broader skills and confidence to enable them to progress to higher education or employment.

These include:

1. Dedicated Careers Lessons: Integrated within the PSHE and Citizenship curriculum to provide comprehensive guidance.
2. Personal and Independent Career Planning: All students participate in one-on-one career and future planning interviews, resulting in a tailored action plan with clear goals.
3. Apprenticeship Workshops: Hands-on sessions to explore apprenticeship opportunities.
4. University Taster Day: An immersive experience at Royal Holloway University to introduce students to university life.
